CBS News employees are “Apoplectic” on reports that Weiss-a journalist with probably pro-Israeli-is on the eve of getting a high job on the Tiffany network, according to a report.
Weiss, the former New York Times opinion editor who left in 2020 after exploding the “illiberal environment” of the letter, is reported to be compatible for a high editorial role in CBS, as part of the premium purchase of its start, The Free Press, in a deal worth up to $ 200 million.
Paramount David Ellison’s boss, who seized network control in a $ 8 billion mega-merger with Skydance, has refused to comment on the talks. But Puck News’s website reported late Wednesday that the deal is in advanced stages and is likely to close soon.
“It’s not happy at all,” a person familiar with the mood within CBS told the status news, adding that many journalists are influencing.
Another interior warned that the arrival of Weiss would launch a fiery storm, especially for the coverage of Israel and Gaza, saying some employees would be “apoplectic” with the prospect of taking editorial leadership.
A prominent journalist outside CBS went further, telling the status they would resign than to work under Weiss, summarizing the situation with a bite line: “Good night and bad luck.”
“Good night and bad luck” is a deliberate game with the words riffs in the legendary anchor of CBS CBS Edward R. Murrow, “Good night and good luck”, which became the title of a 2005 George Clooney movie.
The anti-weiss reaction shows how the shocked CBS staff is already after years of cuts and reduction estimates.
Ellison has tried to calm the nerves for the changes projected to the Tiffany network. In his victory lap after clicking the paramount-scydance deal last month, he said he did not want to “politicize the company”.
However, his first major spray on CBS News is ready to be Weiss-a critic with the sharp language of progressive orthodoxy that built free press on a platform run by subscribers, mixing thought, essays and interviews.
Puck Media reporter, Dylan Beyers, linked Paramount’s offer for Weiss to “very high” $ 100 million while other ratings have gone up to $ 200 million – more than 10 times reported $ 10 million in $ 15 million in annual reconciliation income.
The free press began in 2022 and quickly drew attention to high profile contributors and Weiss’s confrontational voice on hot buttons issues. She has been waiting for interviews with Senators and celebrities, and her “honestly” Podcast has reserved Republican lawmakers including Senate Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
Ellison, 41, inherited CBS News as the center of Paramount Global after regulators were signed in his union. FCC conditioned its approval in large concessions, including eliminating Dei’s mandates and installing an Ombudsman to monitor prejudice.
These changes were already seen within CBS as a warning blow.
An interior compared the Ombudsman’s office to a “hall monitor”, while some former spies were publicly concerned about the tradition of the independent reporting network.
Now the possible arrival of Weiss has complicated those fears – and resurrected questions about the fate of current President Tom Cibowski, who has not commented.
Weiss has publicly silent, and Paramount has refused to confirm the agreement. But with the talks described by Puck as “on the line with a yard”, employees are preparing for a new chapter.
The post has requested comment from Paramount and Weiss. CBS News refused to comment.
